CBAM reporting software and help for importers: what you need in 2026

What the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism asks of importers in its definitive phase, what CBAM software does, and a live shortlist of providers ordered by verified reviews.

The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) puts a carbon price on certain goods imported into the EU. Its definitive regime started on 1 January 2026, so importers now have real obligations: becoming an authorised declarant, collecting emissions data from suppliers, and declaring each year. This guide explains the practical side and what CBAM software can do. It is general information, not legal advice.

Who is affected

CBAM covers imports of steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, electricity and hydrogen, and some products made from them. Importers who bring in less than 50 tonnes of covered goods a year follow a simpler route. If you import above that, you need authorised declarant status. See which rules apply to you.

The yearly cycle in short

  1. Authorisation. Apply to your national authority to become an authorised declarant. Your application number must appear on import documents.
  2. Collect embedded emissions data. For each import you need the emissions embedded in the goods, ideally measured at the producing installation, supplied by the non-EU producer.
  3. Declare. The annual CBAM declaration for 2026 imports is due on 30 September 2027.
  4. Surrender certificates. Certificates for 2026 can be bought from 1 February 2027, with the price tied to the EU carbon market.

What CBAM software does

  • Keeps a register of imports, goods codes and producers.
  • Requests and stores emissions data from suppliers, with evidence.
  • Calculates embedded emissions and the number of certificates you need, using default values where supplier data is missing.
  • Produces the declaration and an audit trail for verifiers.

Questions to ask a provider

  • Does the tool follow the current EU methodology and default values, and how fast do you update it?
  • How do you collect data from suppliers outside the EU, in their language and format?
  • Can the declaration export in the format the EU registry requires?
  • Do you work with accredited verifiers, or can your outputs be given to them?
