Buyer’s guide

What does ESG software cost? Pricing models and what drives the price

How ESG, CSRD and carbon accounting software is priced, what drives cost up, the extras to watch for, and how to compare quotes fairly.

ESG software rarely has a single public price. Most vendors quote after a demo, and the figure depends on your size, your needs and how long you commit. This guide explains how pricing is usually built so you can compare quotes like for like. We do not list prices here, because they change and vary by country. Many company pages in the directory show a “from” price where the vendor has shared one.

Common pricing models

  • Tiered subscription. A fixed yearly fee for a package, with tiers by company size or feature set.
  • Per entity or per site. The price rises with the number of legal entities, facilities or business units.
  • Per user. Common for tools used mainly by a small team, with limited free viewer roles.
  • Per module. A base platform plus separate modules for materiality, carbon accounting, supply chain, tagging or assurance support.
  • Usage-based. Priced by data volume, number of suppliers invited, or number of reports.
  • Services bundled in. Some vendors fold implementation or advisory days into the subscription.

What pushes the price up

  • More entities, countries and sites.
  • More frameworks mapped (CSRD, ISSB, GRI, CDP and more).
  • Scope 3 and supplier data collection.
  • Integrations with finance, HR and energy systems.
  • Digital tagging and filing.
  • Extra support levels, training and a named account manager.

Costs outside the licence

  1. Implementation and set-up, often a one-time fee.
  2. Data work in your own team: hours spent collecting, checking and approving.
  3. Consulting to design your method, run the materiality assessment or review outputs.
  4. Assurance, which is separate from the software. See ESG assurance explained.
  5. Renewal increases. Ask for a cap in writing.

How to compare quotes

Give every vendor the same brief: number of entities, frameworks, users, sites and integrations. Ask for a three-year total, including implementation and support, and ask what is not included. Compare on total cost per year, not the headline fee.

Negotiating

  • Ask for multi-year pricing with a renewal cap.
  • Start with the modules you need now and agree prices for extras in advance.
  • Ask about a pilot or a short first term.
  • Check exit terms: can you export all your data in a usable format?
