ESG reporting rules in the European Union
The EU has the world’s most detailed sustainability reporting rules. The CSRD and ESRS set what in-scope companies report, the CSDDD covers supply chain due diligence, the EU Taxonomy defines sustainable activities, and CBAM puts a carbon price on certain imports. The 2026 Omnibus changes narrowed who has to report and delayed due diligence.
CSRD and ESRS
EU groups with more than 1,000 employees and over €450 million turnover report under the ESRS, with limited assurance, for financial years from 1 January 2027. Simplified ESRS were published in July 2026.

Companies with more than 5,000 employees and over €1.5 billion turnover must address human rights and environmental harm in their supply chains, from 26 July 2029.

In-scope companies report the share of turnover, capital spending and operating spending that is Taxonomy-eligible and aligned.
